The placard says “Let us accept Evacuees not Radioactive rubble!”
Well, we did it! The prefectural gov't recycling section chief held his pencil...but took no notes. He reiterated that Wakayama had already refused rubble, however didn't quite understand that Osaka & Kyoto (an hour away) had not yet formally refused...a bit nervous. BUT, we had 3 section chiefs from Waste Management take us to a separate conference room at the City Hall and one chief echoed his personal agreement that it would be morally impossible to have other civil servants (below him) handling such radioactive rubble at any local incineration facility. Also, he informed us how the regional organization works for Kansai (southwest Japan) disposal of radioactive waste to landfill. Small, local victory here.

FUKUSHIMA Fallout Awareness Network is also delivering letters to Senator Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein today in SanFrancisco and Washington, DC which urgently request safety oversight and congressional hearings
into the lack of milk, water, food and topsoil monitoring of cesium-137 (with a hazardous life
of 300 years) and other dangerous radioisotopes now confirmed in California from the Japanese
nuclear disaster.

I submitted the letter today with two of my collegues to the deputy consul general Mrs. Yoshie Funaki-Kobayashi at the Munich consulate general. She obviously was very impressed to see how many people from how many countries signed it. We did nothing spectacular, no photos or whatsoever. But I'm really glad they didn't refuse to receive it - in the beginning it looked like they would... But after about 40 minutes waiting, the deputy consul general came to see me. She promised she will give it to Tokyo. So, in the end, I really had A LOT OF FUN! Because I was really happy that it's not only the big organizations or the number of people that can make happen things like this but as well average people who get a voice if they want.
